Charmy's Army in "That's a Wrap" 05

Space City Comic Con Day Three

The final day at the con is a bit of a blur. I was SO FREAKING TIRED! After six commissions and about 5 hours of sleep all weekend, I was toast. My voice was gone, so I conversed with the attendees very little throughout the day. As a result, I made no sales.

I met the MC of the show again. I had prepared a commission piece for him at the request of his assistant. It was a drawing of him with his head exploding. I had Charmy and Frenchy flying out with all the brain matter. He saw it and went down to one knee laughing. Made my day.

A few artists did not return. They had very poor sales the previous two days which is odd because I heard other artists did very well. I did great with commissions. I only sold two prints, but my stuff never sells. My art is not what collectors are looking for. I am a COMIC STRIP artist, not serious in many collector's minds. I am not doing these shows to make money though. I am there to get more readers.

By the day's end, I had a total sale of $135. That is $75 of paying off the table. Again, I am not concerned with sales. I feel the show was a huge success. I handed out over 1,000 business cards and another 500 or so fliers. That is a ton of potential new readers!

Plus I was offered another show for free in Bryan, Texas in October. I am all about FREE!!!

Time to begin plans for the next show. It'll be the best one yet. My goal is $300 at Amazing Con. I just know I will meet that goal and probably surpass it!

Space City Comic Con Day Two

Day two was extremely special. I met the MC of the show. He looked me up becuase it turns out he loves my comic strip! That made my day. Later, his assistant hired me for a commission as a gift from her to him. She wanted a drawing of his head blowing up so I decided to do it and have Charmy and Frenchy exploding out of his cranium.

The day was another crazy one. I sold two prints almost immediately. They would be the only prints I would sell the ENTIRE SHOW!!!! I talked to everyone who would listen to me again. My voice was so gone. I muscled through it though because I love to talk... lol.

Once again, someone came up who had been following my strip. "DAVY JONES!", I heard some gentleman exclaim. This guy was a promoter for Brazos Valley STX Con in Bryan, Texas. He loves my strip so much that he invited me to be a promoted guest!!!!! Oh course I jumped on it. HOW COOL IS THAT!!!!

I had a second visit from one of my readers who I met at Comicpalooza, His name is Freddy and he is super cool. On Friday he popped in around 5:00 after he got off work and purchased a few original drawings. He also asked for a few commissions Friday. I did a Frenchy as Harley Quinn and a Charmy as Wolverine. Both came out so bad ass! I had also worked up a Frenchy as Batgirl that morning and he grabbed that one too. Freddy purchased a third of my total sales for the weekend. I need a dozen more readers like him at every show!

Again, the day flew by and it was over in what felt like no time. The artist across from me was so nice. He explained that everyone's bread and butter are Sketch Cards and he asked why I had none. I told him it was because I have no idea what that is. He explained they are collector cards of your art and that they alone can sell enough to pay off your table. He admitted that when a show is bad, the cards will always sell even if nothing else does.

So after a long day, I went home and made cards until 2:00 am and then worked on a commission for the MC of the show until 3:00. I had to get up in two hours so I turned in.

The day was awesome... mainly because I got to hang out with my son the entire weekend.

Great memories!

TOON in tomorrow for the final day and the wrap up.

Space City Comic Con was such a blast!

Over the past weekend I promoted Charmy's Army at a huge Comic Con here in Houston. After bombing at Comicpalooza last month, I really did not have high hopes for the weekend. So how DID it go? Here is a day by day play by play!!!!

My son and I arrived around 7:00 am which was an hour before check in. The people outside waiting with us were awesome. They made the time fly by. And when it was time to check in, the process took no time. I was at my table by 8:10.

I had my table up and ready by 9:00 and the nerves were kicking in. My neighbor Jennifer was amazing. Her energy must have rubbed off on me because by 10:00 I was grounded and ready for the crowd. Man, did it ever get crazy busy!

During the day, I had three commissions which I undercharged for. Hey, it was only my second show! I am learning. That was all I did for the day though. My prints did not sell at all that day.

I was amazed that three people came up to me during the day and tell me that they read my comic strip on GoComics! Of course they did not make any purchases, but the rush of meeting people who actually do read my work was super awesome!

I talked myself into a sore throat by the end of the day. Everyone who walked by seemed to love listening to me explain my comic strip. I really need to pace myself at my upcoming shows.

The day was so much fun and flew by too dang quickly.

I took two of the commissions home to work on. They took me three hours and I charged $15 for the both of them!!!! The artist across from me said I was insane. I told him that I just don't know what I am doing. At my next show, I'll charge more.

TOON in tomorrow for Saturday's report!

Here is today's strip. ENJOY!!!!

You may notice white, empty areas. That is okay!!! Nothing is broke. Well, except for me after two Comic Con appearances. I really need to start MAKING money instead of SPENDING money at these shows. Setup is expensive. I hope one day to break even at a Comic Con.

Oh, so about those white boxes, I working on adding AdSense to my site. If approved, I will make money... FINALLY... with my comic strip. Soon, if I get approved, these white boxes will have ads. I will make money whenever someone clicks on an ad. I will need everyone to click an ad every time they visit. Click throughs are vital!

Of course, there is a great chance I will not be approved. I hear you have to have about 6,000 followers. I have 3,000 on Facebook and GoComics that I need to push over. Currently here on around 300 people read my strips every single day. That is great, but not so attractive to Blogger.

My strip is growing with ever Comic Con I attend. If I get passed this time by AdSense, I will try again later. Keep your fingers crossed, pray or whatever you think will better my luck with Charmy's Army and AdSense.

Space City Comic Con was AWESOME!

I wish to thank everyone, old and new readers, who stopped by. I especially want to thank Freddy for asking for those two commissions. I had a total of five commissions over the weekend. As a result, I slept very little this weekend... yet I was never tired. Energy level was so freaking high.

This week, I will rerun "That's a Wrap". New strips will resume next week.

Getting excited about my second comic convention appearance. I will be at Houston's Space City Comic Con at table AA-68. I hope it is a better location than I had at Comicpalooza. My goal is to make $300 selling posters and to gain 50 new followers to Okra Comics.

At Comicpalooza, I focused my energy promoting my Patreon crowdfunding site. No one even checked out my page there. So this time, I am going to promote this website. If I fail again, I will have to do some serious soul searching.

Cartooning is my dream and my heart tells me I can do this. My heart doesn't pay the bills though! lol.... Five long years ago I created Charmy's Army and to this day I still believe it is an awesome comic strip. The problem is that five years is a very long time! Hopefully this show will be the turning point in the right direction for Charmy, Weaver and Frenchy.

Stay TOON'ed!!!!

Sorry that I only just now posted this. My computer is on its last legs. Not sure what I am going to do. I really need a new computer but that would mean all new software too. After five years of chasing my dream, the odds just stack up higher and higher and the pile looks to be falling on top of me like an avalanche.

I really need something big to break soon!!!!

If you are reading my posts here on Okra Comics, please leave me a comment. I am not sure if this web page is reaching anyone.

Charmy's Army in "Army Strife" 13

With July settling in, it is time to set new goals for the rest of the year. None of the goals I set for the first half of the year succeeded. In fact I took several steps backwards!!!

The one paper Charmy ran in went under. At one point, Charmy was in two papers. The other start up went under as well. My goal is to get into one newspaper by year's end. I have no leads and no one so far has returned my emails. I have contacted a dozen papers. Not looking good!

After nine months, I have only 5 patrons. I am posting so many more posts than the other cartoonists here. To their credit, they are killing it on Patreon! Some have only 30 - 40 creations yet they are pulling in several thousand dollars each month. That is insane!!!! Good for them. I have three more Comic Con appearances coming up and my goal is to get at least 5 new patrons out of the shows. Honestly, this is going to be so tough.

I believe I can do this! My goal is to have Comixology pick me up and have them help distribute my comic book. I must finish the first issue first so this goal is months away. I totally believe I will be accepted. If so, the publicity will help me achieve the first two goals.

That is it. I am not setting goals for syndication or for being picked up by GoComics. It just is not ever happening. It is up to me to forge my own success by creating a new avenue. Path a new road for all other cartoonists to follow and also succeed. I am going to lead that charge. Just stay TOON'ed.

Here is today's strip! How do you like Doc's office? One day I am going to map out the entire camp for everyone.

So another month has ended and I am reflecting. Have I made any progress in the past month? Nope. My numbers are the same and I have probably fewer interactions than I have had in the past six months. To be honest, this month was a bit of a downer. After Comicpalooza I had hoped a door or two would open. Instead I have not even seen a door!

I held my first Live Chat a few weeks ago and 5 people showed up. To be honest, that was pretty awesome. My fear was that no one would show up. If it wasn't for the success of the chat session, this month would have been less than inspiring.

My next goal is to drive readers here. Beginning at Space City Con, I will begin promoting I have had two interactions here all year. Next month I hope to have at least 5 comments show up. That's the goal. Baby steps. Man, getting an audience is so freaking hard! I am so in need of a little inspiration. Maybe July will be my lucky month. Time will tell....
