The Great Fludini 06

I am seeing some crazy numbers on my page stats. I am getting about 3,000 daily hits. I am wondering if my stats are real.

If you are reading and enjoying my comic strip, please leave me a comment.

In the coming months, I hope to redesign this site. I want to make this look much more professional. I may move the blog to WordPress and pay for a Comic mainframe. Money, money, money.... I have to learn how to MAKE money and not SPEND money.

I made the GoComics picks of the week twice in a row. I have never made the picks back to back. This is really cool. As a matter of fact, in the past 5 years, I have only made their picks six times. That is it. Only six times.

HELP ME GET SYNDICATED... Simply pop over to the GoComics Blog Post and leave a comment there stating why you love Charmy's Army. Here is the link...

A moment of your time could help me see a dream of a lifetime come true!

Another great strip here!

I am going to start prepping my submissions for all of the syndicates. This will be a lot of work. My goal is to have King Features pick me up. I have made two other submissions to them in the past. I have never received a response... not even a form letter.

I truly believe I am good enough to at least get a form letter. You must remember, these syndicates get about 8,000 submissions each year. I doubt mine was ever reviewed. Can you imagine having that many submissions coming in?

My chances are slim to none of ever being syndicated, but I don't care. At this point I happy with my large following on the internet. This may not bring in revenue, but it gives my great happiness knowing there are so many people enjoying my silly stories.

If I am not syndicated by March, I am going to hit up the newspapers myself, one by one, and attempt to get myself published. I am bound and determined to succeed one way or another.

You gotta admit, Frenchy is awesome! Since joining the cast a few years ago, my ratings have skyrocketed. So now she is demanding a huge raise.

And I just signed Flimp to a big contract. I gotta start making money at this!!!!

Use Twitter to shout out to the syndicates about Charmy's Army.  Here are their Twitter names...

Gocomics =
King Features =
Universal UClick =
Washing Post Writer's Group =

Creators used to have a Twitter account, but it appears to be gone. Bummer.

Bug the heck out of them. A tweak a day could get me the attention I need.

I love this gag. Simple, silly and short. The three S's for Success.

My writing has become much stronger lately. I ma so very happy with the progress of my strip. Now the next step is to crank this baby up and see how hard I can push myself.

Beginning in November, I am going to blow up this strip. This means more laughs for you. It also means something very cool. I am going to launch my Youtube channel!!! That means I need to go on a crash diet... I type this as I down my root beer.....

Tell you neighbors and tell your friends. Charmy's Army is going to be HUGE!!!!

Davy Meets Stephan Pastis

Leave a comment... No comments:
Sunday was a huge day for me. I hear stories about how Stephan Pastis got his start due to the support of established cartoonists Charles M. Shultz and Scott Adams. Stephen had a chance meeting (actually I believe Stephan was doing some stalking) with Charles M. Shultz which helped him get picked up and syndicated. I figured maybe if I impressed Stephan enough, he may become a champion of my comic strip and my lifelong dream.

Stephan had an autograph signing here in Houston this past Sunday and I leaped at my opportunity. I had only two minutes with Stephan and I was nervous as heck. I drew up a mash up of our characters and presented it to him. He seemed genuinely appreciative of my gift. I put a business card in there and told him I was on Comics Sherpa. I asked him to check out my strip. Will he actually do so? Who knows. What I do know is that I made the attempt and I am so happy I did. I seriously doubt anything becomes of this meeting, or if in two weeks he will even recall me giving this to him.

Man, I look at that photo and I look like a giant! Stephen wasn't small... I must really be huge. I look like I am freaking nine feet tall. Maybe I should have been a pro wrestler. I would have had a better chance becoming the next Hulk Hogan than I would ever stand a chance of being a syndicated cartoonist. Plus I am a wimp. I bet Stephan would whoop my butt in a steel cage match. I do think I would win a hardcore match mainly because I have watched a lot of ECW matches. Man, I am going on a tangent again.

So, I worked up a really cool drawing for Stephan Pastis. I wanted to do something that would make him laugh. It did not work. He was impressed with it... but he did not laugh. Bummer. I showed a few people the drawing and they also did not laugh. Hmmm, maybe I should have worked up a few more ideas. Dang it. Oh well, it served its purpose... That being to entice Stephan Pastis to check out my comic strip.

The signing was at a Houston Middle School. I left my phone number on the business card I left for Stephan with the drawing. My big fear is that I get a call from the school in a few days and they tell me they found the drawing in the auditorium and wanted to see if I lost it. That said, my big fear is that Stephan forgot it, or did not want it, and I blew my big chance,

The goal of course was to get Stephan to fall in love with my comic strip. A syndicated cartoonist backing me and my dream would be amazing. It is so freaking hard to get syndicated. I have been trying for twenty years on and off. Syndicates wouldn't even respond to me with a form letter for years. I have never to this day received a response from The Washington Post or King Features. Never getting a response from those two syndicates has really hurt my confidence over the years.

The good news is that I got actual letters back from Creators and Universal UClick last year. These were not form letters. Each had suggestions for me and my comic strip. I have addressed the issues and will now present new submissions in two weeks. I strongly feel this is the final submission for me. If one of them bites, I will be so happy. If not, this will be the sign that I need to move on after five long years and develop a new comic strip.

Bottom line is I am never going to give up. I will be a cartoonist in at least 500 newspapers one day. It may be soon... it may be another 30 years from now.... though I doubt it. Not sure I'll be able to draw once I get THAT old. I'll be lucky if I am still eating solid food.

The next few months are huge. I don't expect any response for months... maybe six months. Once the submissions are out I will finally have time to breathe a little easier and work on some new projects for my comic strip, Charmy's Army. I have so many cool things planned. I just need to find a way to make a living at this dream of mine. Imagine how much material I could crank out if I did this full time.

The Great Fludini 01

Syndication is the goal. The chances are slim to none of ever making it. Heck, after 5 long years even GoComics doesn't have me on their radar. In case you are not aware, I pay to be on GoComics. If you are good, GoComics will move you from the "Pay to Play" section to their "Main Page". Being moved to the main page is sweet because not only do you not have to pay $120 every year to be there, but you get promoted. Once promoted, everyone can find your strip. Right now, I am buried along with 800 other cartoonists paying for their strip to be here.

How do I get noticed? I have no idea. I have a large following from all of these Comic Con appearances I am doing. That is so cool. I wish the audience was bigger... and I want to do this for a living. I have spent a few thousand dollars this year on my strip promoting it at these shows. I lose so much money at each Comic Con. I gain readers though... but it is depressing looking at my career stall. If anything, I am moving backwards! lol...

I am having a blast though. The reality of it all is that there are thousands of people with my dream. I am good and I bet hundreds are better. Next year I am only making appearances at two Comic Cons to save money. I am going to continue chasing this dream. It is too much fun mingling with my readers at the shows. Plus, I love writing and drawing this strip.

So long as I have faithful fans, I will always produce the greatest comic strip that very few people have ever heard of, CHARMY'S ARMY!!!

Charmy's Army in "Lost in Translation" 06

Leave a comment... No comments:

Something is brewing in Okrapolis. Can you feel the energy exerting from my cranium? If not, I bet you can smell it. It smells like burnt marshmallows.

My mind is peculating ideas for issue one of Charmy's Army. Originally, I thought about doing a collection of strips. Now I am thinking bigger. I want to do an actual comic book with one super-sized story. Oh, what to do.

My goal is to have a printed comic book for June's Comicpalooza. That show will be my next show. Plenty of time, right? Nope. I need time to print the dang things. I am going with a small press run. I am thinking 25 copies. That'll run me about $75. I plan on selling them for $5 each. That is not a lot of profit. If they sell, I will double my investment. My gut is telling me I will never sell more than 6 copies. I hope I am wrong.

First things first, I need a comic to sell. I am going to dig in and figure out my gameplan next week. My journey will be documented here so stay TOON'ed!!!

Charmy's Army in "Lost in Translation" 05

Now that I've lost all of my fans from Germany, I need to plot out what's next for me and Charmy's Army. I have big plans prior to June's Comicpalooza which will be my next show.

PRINTED COMIC BOOK: I will have a printed comic book for purchase. Yep! How cool is that? Well it will be more than cool. I have something so extra special planned for this amazingly cool publication. I cannot even get into it right now because it is so crazy cool that I don't want someone stealing my idea.

PRINTED IN NEWSPAPERS: I vow that by June my comic strip will be printed regularly in a few newspapers. If the syndicates continue to ignore my submissions, then I am taking the bull by the horns. My next plan is to knock on the door of every newspaper in the US. This strip is too good and my determination is too bold.

MORE POSTERS AND SKETCH CARDS: I plan on doubling my poster count and tripling my sketch and print card count! I am going to be so freaking busy!!! This will mean at least two new posters each month. Insane. Why do I do this to myself?

That is the plan. If I live through this, June will be one hell of a show!

Charmy's Army in "Lost in Translation" 04

Thanks for all the support at my shows this year! It was rougher than I expected, but I had fun. My goal for next year has changed a bit. The last three shows have been so bad that I must pass on my goal to appear at a show in Dallas and a show in Austin next year. Until I can prove to myself that I can draw big and pay off tables and hotel expenses, I have to scale down my 2016 tour.

This past weekend I tested my first out of town show in Bryan and I sold nothing the entire weekend. Talk about a LONG three hour drive home... I hit traffic which added time... The drive home was filled with all sorts of emotions. Most of the emotions were very positive. I have had a few good shows. One show, I even paid off my table. Seven others though barely paid for parking.

So why even do more shows?

My readership goes through the roof after each comic convention appearance. My Facebook number grow only slightly which is fine. The reason I must continue is the fact that my numbers on my website always blows up.

My next show be be in mid June next year. I am not gonna do any more shows until then. I am done, I even unpacked my suitcase this morning... A suitcase that has remained packed since my first show last May. Time to set away from the shows and work on my art.

Next year I will work two shows... Comicpalooza and Amazing Con. Both are great shows for which I will gladly fork out some big bucks for. If I do any other shows, it will only be because I had free tables offered to me. I hope those offers come up again because even at those free shows, I barely mad enough to cover parking!

Don't get me wrong, I am no way down in spirit over this year. It was so much fun. I love meeting and talking with possible readers. At a few shows I even met some hardcore Charmy's Army fans! Yes, they ARE out there!!!! Those experiences were amazing.

Next year will be great. I have big plans for Comicpalooza that will hopefully draw in people to my art. I made so many amazing friends with the other vendors that seeing them next year will feel like a family reunion of sorts.

Once again, thanks for all who came out to support me and my ants! I hope to see each and every one of you again next year at Comicpalooza!!!!

Charmy's Army in "Lost in Translation" 03

Typical day before a show. I am once again going to be up all night printing something new to sell. Nothing ever sells so I killmyself every show trying to come up with something new. I have 10 new Black and White posters I am trying to print out on Bristol Board at 11 x 17. It is taking about ten minutes per poster. I want three copies... 30 times 10 is 300 minutes....

I need to plan better.

Enjoy today's strip while I chug a 2 liter bottle of Coke.

Charmy's Army in "Lost in Translation" 02

I am so excited about this weekend's show! I will be in Booth 203 at Brazos Valley STX Con in Bryan, Texas. I will have a 10 x 10 booth!!! This is a much needed upgrade from my regular six foot table. Because of the extra wall space, I am creating a series of 13 x 19 posters just for the show. I will be spending all evening tomorrow printing these.

All in all, I will have about $350 invested in this show. Scary. I average an intake of about $60 per show. I really need my luck to change. Amazing Con was the only good show I have been to this year with it's awesome crowd. The crowds at all of my other shows seemed more interested in the celebrity guests.

This show will be my turnaround. I can feel it. Of course I said that about Comicpalooza Fanfest and that was a disaster. I think there was maybe 300 attendees there over the two day show! Talk about a beating... All the artists took a big whooping that weekend.

My allergies are kicking my butt. Gotta go. Not sure what hurts worse, these dry, red eyes or the beating I took at Comicpalooza Fanfest... lol.....

Charmy's Army in "Lost in Translation" 01

It is so key to anyone's success.

What motivates me? Well, it is NOT reading other comic strips. Nope. In my youth, reading other strips was my motivation, but not I feel tainted when I read the work of other cartoonists. I need my ideas fresh and original. So unfortunately I no longer can read treasuries by my mentors... as much as I want to, I just can't.

Today my motivation is music. I love jamming to Cheap Trick. They are in town in a few weeks here in Houston and I want to go. It is a school night so I have to miss them yet again. My youngest son is a huge fan too so I cannot go without him. I would not be able to enjoy the show if I did go without him. I am such a good dad.

So which album do I listen to? All of them... except The Doctor... that album was just so bad with the exception of three songs... Kiss Me Red, It's Only Love, and Take Me to the Top. The other songs are clunkers.

My top pick is the 1977 self-titled debut Cheap Trick. I listen to that album once a week. Heaven Tonight, Dream Police, Live at Budakon and Rockford are also amazing. I keep every album, even The Doctor, on my phone so I can get my Cheap Trick fix anytime it is needed.

So will Cheap Trick ever make it into my comic strip? Oh yeah, just a matter of time...

Charmy's Army in "Crossword Puzzled" 06

Leave a comment... No comments:

This is how I feel after trying to do a crossword puzzle. This is also how I feel after a three day Comic Con. Heck, even the two day shows wear me out.

We are one week away from my last appearance of the year. If you are in Bryan, Texas on October 10th or 11th, check me out. This show is going to be huge. I am going out with a bang. The promoter is the best in the business so this will be the best show of the year.

A good show in Bryan will mean more appearances in 2016! A bad show means only two shows next year... maybe three. An amazing show will mean more long road trips in 2016!!!! Let's all hope for an AMAZING show....
